A £6.99 bottle of red wine from the supermarket Morrisons has won a top award after beating rivals that cost almost ten times as much in a blind test.
The shop's M Signature Pinotage - a red South African grape - was the only one out of 49 to scoop gold in the the Decanter World Wine Awards.
It even beat bottles such as Beyerskloof's 'elegant' Diesel Pinotage 2012, which sells in the UK for as much as £65.60, but came bronze.
The Morrisons bottle is described as 'balanced yet bursting with spicy dark forest fruits and a hint of woodsmoke'.
A spokeswoman for the prestigious awards said: 'The Morrisons Pinotage was the only Pinotage to win a gold.
'Each wine is judged individually, so not against each other as such, but it was deemed better than all the others, regardless of price, as it was the only one which won a gold. It won on its own merit.'
