Two suspected female suicide bombers heading towards Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, got themselves killed by explosives strapped totheir bodies after failed attempts to get a transport into the city, security sources said.
A police officer working in Jakana town, 40km West of Maiduguri said the two women who were said to have emerged from the bushes at the outskirts of the town, were trying to flag down vehicle going to Maiduguri but we’re ignored by several motorists.
“The two women were seen standing by the roadside for a long time but could not get vehicles to convey them”, said the police officer, who doesn’t want to be named in this report.
“At about 4:20pm, we heard a loud explosion and when we rushed there, we met one of them shattered by the explosion while the other got killed but still have the bomb she strapped around her waist intact, undetonated”.
“Many motorists have become wary of picking female passengers especially on this Kano-Maiduguri highway because of the several cases of female suicide bombing incidents recorded”.
“We are not able to go near them to carry the corpses because we fear the second bomb on the body of the second woman may go off. We are waiting for the antibomb squads to arrive to defuse the bombs”
