70 percent of college students stressed about finances

 lynks     23:17     No comments

7 out of 10 college students feel stressed about their personal finances, according to a new national survey.
Nearly 60 percent said they worry about having enough money to pay for school, while half are concerned about paying their monthly expenses.
The findings suggest that the pressures of student loan debt and finding ways to make ends meet are weighing on America's college students, said Anne McDaniel, co-author of the study.

In fact, 32 percent of students reported neglecting their studies at least sometimes because of the money they owed.

"The number of students feeling financial stress is striking," said McDaniel, who is associate director of research and data management at The Ohio State University's Center for the Study of Student Life.

Donald Trump Sues Univision for $500 Million, criticize NBC: "They Are Weak"

 lynks     22:40     politics     No comments

Donald Trump stands by his comments on immigration, even if he's standing alone. In an interview with Bill O'Reilly on Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor on Tuesday, June 30, the Republican presidential hopeful not only doubled down on his controversial remarks but also revealed that he's suing Univision for a whopping $500 million after the network dropped the broadcast of the Miss USA pageant.

"The papers were just filed, so that will be interesting," the 66-year-old real-estate mogul told O'Reilly. "I have a signed contract for five years on the pageants. They have no right to terminate. They didn't even send me a letter, they terminated with a PR statement. They called me, also -- one of the top people at Univision, so apologetic -- 'Donald, we shouldn't be doing this, I know that. We'll pay you whatever money you need or whatever money you want.'"

Mozambique Has authorized Homosexuality

 lynks     22:22     No comments

The old code, dating back to 1886, targeted anyone “who habitually engages in vices against nature” — though no known prosecutions took place after Mozambique became independent in 1975.

Breaking the law was punishable by up to three years of hard labor.

“It’s a symbolic victory, as social inclusion remains the main challenge,” Frank, a student gay rights activist who declined to give his full name, told news agency, AFP.

The new penal code, which was announced last December by then President Armando Guebuza, also decriminalizes abortion after lobbying by civil rights organizations.

In neighboring Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe is known for his crusades against homosexuality, and discrimination is widespread across the continent.

Greece misses IMF payment

 lynks     22:15     No comments

Country becomes first developed nation to default on IMF payment after midnight deadline for $1.8bn payment passes.

Greece slipped deeper into its financial abyss after the bailout programme it has relied on for five years expired at midnight on Tuesday and the country failed to repay a loan due to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
With its failure to repay the roughly $1.8bn to the IMF, Greece became the first developed country to fall into arrears on payments to the fund. The last country to do so was Zimbabwe in 2001.
After Greece made a last-ditch effort to extend its bailout, eurozone finance ministers decided in a teleconference late on Tuesday that there was no way they could reach a deal before the deadline.
"It would be crazy to extend the programme," said Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbleom, who heads the eurozone finance ministers' body known as the eurogroup. "So that cannot happen and will not happen."

All 122 people on board and several others on ground killed as aircraft hit empty residential buildings in Medan city.

At least 130 bodies have been found after an Indonesian air force C-130 crashed in a residential neighbourhood in the city of Medan on the northern island of Sumatra, according to military officials.
The plane came down on Tuesday hitting empty residential buildings after bursting into flames shortly after takeoff.
As rescuers continued to pull bodies and body parts out of the wreckage, a military spokesman told Al Jazeera that 110 passengers and 12 crew were believed to have been on board.
Eight others were believed to have been killed on the ground.
Late on Tuesday, Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed sorrow at the accident, tweeting in Bahasa, "May the families be given patience and strength... May we remain protected from disaster."
The Hercules transport plane was on its way from an air force base in Medan to Tanjung Pinang in Sumatra.

More bodies recovered after military C-130 plane crashes in Indonesian city

 lynks     22:05     No comments

Searchers pulled more bodies Wednesday from the charred wreckage of an Indonesian military plane that authorities say was carrying more than 120 people when it crashed near a residential area.

Military personnel and their family members, students and other civilians were among those on board the C-130 Hercules plane that went down shortly after takeoff Tuesday in Medan, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

So far, 91 bodies have been recovered from the crash site, Air Marshal Agus Supriatna, the commander of the Indonesian Air Force, said Wednesday.
But more are expected to be retrieved from the shattered remains of the large transport aircraft.

The military transport plane had 122 people aboard -- 110 passengers and 12 crew members -- when it took off from Soewondo Air Force Base in Medan, according to Supriatna.

World Bank urges China to embrace basic financial reforms

 lynks     21:48     bussiness     No comments

The World Bank has urged China to carry out fundamental reform of its state-dominated financial system to keep economic growth on track.

The bank said Wednesday that the communist government needs to address wasteful investment, over-indebtedness and weak regulation of its shadow banking system. It said failure to do that could "deflect the economic trajectory" of the country.

The recommendations echo those of private sector analysts who say Beijing needs to overhaul a government-run banking system that subsidizes state industry at the expense of savers and that provides little credit to entrepreneurs and emerging industries.

The World Bank said Beijing needs to separate its roles as owner of China's banks, regulator and strategic planner and to construct a system that channels more lending to productive industries and manages risks better.

15 Ways To Wake Up With Motivation

 lynks     21:46     lifestyle     No comments

Motivation and excitement about your vision, your ambition, your goal, give you energy and an ability to do what others can, but won’t do. If you’re motivated, you work longer hours, but are also more productive and focused in those hours you work. But what if you’re not internally motivated day after day to hustle, work, and trudge through the daily tasks that make-up the path to your end goal?

by Chad Howse -

15 Ways To Wake Up With Motivation

1. Have your biggest dreams written on a massive white board

Your dreams and audacious goals should be written where you can consistently see them. I use a big white board next to my desk. On the white board are my big goals, my weekly goals, and motivational quotes. This helps me keep the eye on the prize, maintain focus, and ward of the distractions that make their way into my day.

2. Focus only on TODAY

We can get lost in thinking about the future or regretting the past. What’s terrible about this is that while you’re worrying and wishing you were in a different position in life, someone else is working.

Worry does no good. If you truly want to succeed you need to learn how to focus your mind only on the present. Do what you can do in the moment, work on the project at hand, accomplish your daily goals and tasks, and you’ll do the same with your bigger, lifelong goals and dreams.

3. Have only 3 things on your to do list that MUST BE accomplished

Don’t try and fill your day with too much. Sure, you’d like to get a lot accomplished, but there should be 3 (only 3) important tasks that NEED to be accomplished. Focus on these first. When they’re completed, and only when they’re completed, are you allowed to move on to other things.

Too many people spread themselves thin. What ends up happening is they get overwhelmed, which crushes their motivation, and nothing gets done.

If you’re focused, you’ll stay motivated, you’ll get more done, and you’ll be where you want to be a lot faster.

4. Practice discipline

Discipline isn’t sexy, but it’s necessary. It’s in discipline that we gain freedom. We gain freedom to get more done, to improve, and to remove regret from our lives.

When you’re focused only on today, doing only what needs to be done in the now, nothing else matters. But discipline needs to be practiced everyday.

When a reporter asked two-time MVP point guard Steve Nash, how often he trained growing up, he said (and I paraphrase) Everyday. I never missed a workout, because I knew that if I missed one, I’d give myself a reason to miss another.

If you practice laziness and distraction, that is what you’ll be, and you’ll be left with nothing but regret and failure. Practice being successful by doing what successful people do everyday: they remain disciplined.

Remember, take it one day at a time. Don’t get overwhelmed with eternity when the present should be your only concern.

5. Create an inspiring environment

Your environment HAS TO inspire you. Surround yourself with images that motivate you, but also in a clean, clear space. Clutter truly does clutter the mind, but it can also be depressing to be in a messy area.

Pattern your work environment as you’d love it to be. Spend a little money on a nice desk if that’s your thing, but make sure your work space inspires you and motivates you. This is where the magic happens. This is where you should be spending most of your time. So make sure it affects you positively.

6. Have a quotes list near your desk, and your bed

It’s not the critic who c

Two sex offenders were killed in a 10-hour riot at an understaffed maximum security prison, a report has found.

Several hundred inmates at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, Nebraska, went on a rampage after being let out of their cells to get over-the-counter medication around 2am on May 10.

Two prison officers were also assaulted in the incident and one inmate was shot in the leg.

A report by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services described the riot as a 'destructive 10-hour rampage'.

India's next weapon against climate change? The heat-tolerant dwarf cow

 lynks     07:05     No comments

India (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Worsening heat, fodder shortages and the threat of drought are forcing many hard-hit dairy farmers in the Anantapur area of India's southern Kerala state to reduce their herds, experts say.

"This is nothing less than a catastrophe," said Ananthakrishnan Kannappan, a livestock agent for 30 years in Anantapur. "This is the first time that due to lack of water and fodder, farmers are eagerly competing to sell off their livestock for throwaway prices."

But the solution to the problem is simple and small, livestock experts argue: heat-tolerant dwarf cows.

A team of researchers from Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and the state government's Animal Husbandry Department are now promoting a switch to Vechur and Kasargod cattle, two local varieties known for being easy to raise, resistant to diseases and – most important – better at tolerating high temperatures than the more popular crossbred cattle.

"High-yielding crossbreed varieties of cattle can faint or even die during hot and humid summer days," said E.M. Muhammed, an expert on animal breeding and genetics at the university. "Our natural breeds can better withstand the effects of climate change."

Dwarf cows, on the other hand, appear to carry a "thermometer gene" that allows them to better tolerate high temperatures, researchers said.

Dwarf cows were already gaining popularity among some farmers because they consume less food and water than conventional cattle varieties, the experts said. Small-scale farmers need only one or two dwarf cows to meet the milk needs of their households, they said.

The breeds are also less susceptible to mastitis, a common udder infection. Kerala farmers lose at least 250 crore rupees (around $40 million) each year due to mastitis in crossbreed varieties, according to researchers at the animal husbandry department.

According to the 2012 Kerala livestock census, not a single case of severe mastitis has been reported among dwarf cows.

QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY

Still, many commercial cattle farmers are skeptical about the benefits of downsizing to dwarves. Of the 2.3 million cattle in Kerala, only 6.5 percent are dwarf varieties, agricultural experts say.

One issue is cost. A dwarf cow costs almost the same as a larger crossbred – about 20,000 rupees ($300). But a crossbreed cow, when it is healthy, produces much more milk than its dwarf counterpart, making crossbreeds a popular choice among farmers.

"I am concerned about the commercial aspects," said K. Ravindran, a farmer from Palakkad. "In order to produce 10 liters of milk, a farmer has to rear at least four Vechur cows instead of one crossbreed."

But Basha Balakrishnan, a farmer living in Calicut, argues that customers are willing to pay more for milk from dwarf cows. Her dairy herd includes 35 crossbreeds and 15 dwarf varieties, and she says she can sell a liter of milk from the smaller animals for three times as much as the larger cows.

"Though dwarf milk is costlier, many people — especially the rich who live in flats in Calicut — are eager to purchase it because it is thought to be more nutritious than crossbred milk," she said.

Balakrishnan's dwarf cows are even famous. One of her Vechur cows was recently featured in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's shortest cow at a height of 61cm (24 inches).

With India facing growing heat and drought threats, other state governments have reached out to learn more about Kerala’s dwarf cows as a way to help protect their own cattle and dairy industries.

Government officials from the state of Gujarat recently bought three Vechur cows from Kerala, while Punjab Chief Minister Prakesh Singh Badal took six dwarf cows from Kerala to his farm in Chandigarh, livestock experts say.

"It is a fact that the characteristics of the seasons have been altered by the disastrous impacts of climate change, so our lifestyle needs to adapt to using our indigenous flora and fauna," said K. Ramankutt

Gang of drunk thugs trash convenience store after being refused service of cigars

 lynks     07:02     No comments

The security cameras of a Washington D.C. convenience store have captured a group of insolent thugs tearing up the shop, after the cashier refused to sell them cigars because they didn't have identification.

The worker said the young men were not armed but appeared drunk.

At least one was drinking alcohol.

They entered 77 Market in Park View about 5am Saturday.

'I think they were drinking too much alcohol and they smoked something. I don't know,' cashier Esays Woldemesektl told Fox 5.

After asking for cigars, Mr Woldemesektl told the men they needed photo ID in order to buy them.

Has India's southwest monsoon collapsed?

 lynks     06:56     No comments

In the space of six days, Mumbai received all the rain it might expect for June. To be more precise, one and a half times as much, and it caused deep flooding.
In fact, since the monsoon burst with a vengeance, on June 12, the Indian city has collected over twice the expected June rainfall.
Gujarat flooded just as suddenly from the same aggressive surge of the western arm of the monsoon and the floods in the west are still receding.
After a slow start, the monsoon rain seemed promising. After arriving days late in the south, it then rushed across all of India and crossed into Pakistan, catching up with itself and then going ahead of schedule, by over two weeks.
West Rajasthan was declared in monsoon on June 26, when this westernmost state would normally have to wait until July 15.
All this has prompted speculation that the official forecast of a deficient monsoon season must be wrong.
This, however, is man's short-term perception. Since June 27. there has been a major reduction in general rain.
The official forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department, for the whole season, suggests at best, 92 per cent of average, for the whole country.
As of June 29, only four states were showing as deficient and 13 quoted as in "excess" of the monsoon norm.
The start of July, however, looks generally drier than average, although there will be plenty of thunderstorms around.
If, at the end of the season, the rains have not recovered to at least normal, then the monsoon will be declared as "deficient," as is currently expected.

The Easiest Languages for Native English Speakers to Learn

 lynks     04:22     No comments

Depending on your circumstances, some languages can be harder to grasp than others. If English is your first language, these languages are widely considered to be the easiest to learn how to speak, read, and write.

For many years the Defense Language Institute (DLI) has worked with the Department of Defense to teach foreign language to the U.S. military and Federal Agencies. Because they’ve been doing it for so long, they’ve managed to learn a thing or two about which languages are more difficult for native English speakers to learn. According to the DLI, these are the easiest languages in terms of how long it takes to become moderately proficient:

Spanish
French
Italian
Portuguese

These four languages are considered Category I languages, and only take 26 weeks to learn enough to speak, read, and write in the given language. Keep in mind, however, that those 26 weeks are intensive, so learning on your own could still take much longer. On the other hand, the difficulty goes all the way up to Category IV, with languages like Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese taking at least 64 weeks of intensive training to reach the same level of proficiency.

Jimmy Kimmel Asks Kids What They Understand About Same-Sex Marriage:

 lynks     04:13     No comments

While most of the world (and a barrage of celebrities) spent the weekend celebrating SCOTUS' decision to legalize gay marriage, some critics expressed concern that the notion of same sex unions was too much for children to understand.

As a father of three, Jimmy Kimmel decided this was an important question to answer, and figured there was only one way to find out whether the concern was valid -- by asking the kids themselves!

So he sent his Jimmy Kimmel Live! cameras out onto the streets of New York City to find out exactly what children understood when they heard the term “gay marriage.

"It's when two men and two women get married," one little girl replied confidently, when asked the question by Kimmel's reporter.

"So it's when four people get married?" the man behind the camera continued.

"No!" she said, making it quite clear who the one struggling to understand the concept was!

"When should two people get married?" the reporter asked another child.

"In the afternoon," he replied, very seriously!

This was contained in a release on the DMO’s website, showing the country’s debt stock profile.

The figure shows a decrease of about $300 million from the $9.7 trillion that the country had as its debt stock as at December 31, 2014.

It was indeed a proud moment for our country as Indian women shuttlers Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa brought home the trophy for the Canada Open Women's Doubles. The Indian duo played against Dutch pair Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in the nail-biting final clash.

The Dutch pair struggled hard to get the nine points to tie the game at the score of 15-15. Should China build our railways? Its bullet trains could soon travel at 310MPH after cutting edge upgrade (it would reach Paris from London in 57 minutes)

 lynks     11:57     No comments

Already a world leader in train technology, China is set to ramp things up even further as it plans to run trains at 310mph.

After some ten years of research and testing, new traction technology is now ready for use. In May this year the new system was introduced on a subway line in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province.

The technology was developed by China's CRRC Corp at its Zhuzhou Institute in Hunan province.
The technology has been described by key leaders in the project as the 'most important part' of the bullet train development.

Canadian man sentenced to life in prison for killing and dismembering his Chinese lover and mailing the body parts to schools and political parties has joined a matchmaking website for inmates.

Luka Magnotta's profile was posted Sunday on Canadian Inmates Connect Inc., a website that tries to hook up lonesome convicts — some behind bars for violent offenses like first-degree murder — with potential companions on the outside.

The profile features two photos of the former stripper and prostitute in an unbuttoned white dress shirt. He was convicted in December of first-degree murder for the 2012 killing and dismemberment of university student Jun Lin in Montreal in a case that horrified Canadians.

Obama signs trade, worker assistance bills into law

 lynks     11:46     No comments

President Barack Obama has signed into law two hard-fought bills giving him greater authority to negotiate international trade deals and providing aid to workers whose jobs are displaced by such pacts.

The measures were politically linked to secure bipartisan support for the trade legislation. They set the stage for the conclusion of a 12-nation Pacific Rim economic pact.

The trade bill gives Congress the right to approve or reject trade agreements, but not change or delay them. Obama defied the wishes of most members of his Democratic Party and frayed relations with organized labor to push the legislation.

The worker assistance was part of a broader trade preferences bill that extends a measure easing trade between the U.S. and sub-Saharan Africa.

9 June 2015 | Africa Zambian ex-president acquitted over oil case

 lynks     11:42     No comments

 - Former Zambian president Rupiah Banda was acquitted on Monday after a court case in which he was alleged to have personally benefited from a $2.5 million oil deal with Nigeria.

At a trial that began in early 2013, Banda was charged with abusing his authority in awarding the Nigerian contract.

"The case is dismissed and the consequences of this is that the accused is acquitted," Magistrate Joshua Banda told the court.

"There is no evidence brought by the prosecution that the benefits were to accrue to the accused's family and the prosecution failed to interview a single official from Nigeria."

7 Bollywood celebs who love cutouts dresses

 lynks     10:46     fashion     No comments

Kareena Kapoor Khan, a sworn patron of the trend, has experimented with everything from shoulder and waist cutouts to midriff-baring looks. Malaika Arora Khan proves that an asymmetric cutout around the neckline can really up your décolletage game. Lisa Haydon's gold and white floor-sweeping gown may have a high neck, but wide cut-outs at the waist make it far from coy. Want to opt for something more daring? Look no further than Nargis Fakhri's keyhole gown.

Kate Moss and Lara Stone Star in Balenciaga’s Fall Ads

 lynks     10:32     No comments

While Alexander Wang’s Fall 2015 collection for Balenciaga played into the more restrained codes of the house, his Fall campaign adds a little naughtiness. And who better to get naughty than models Kate Moss and Lara Stone?

For the Fall/Winter 2015 campaign, I thought of pairing two iconic models together who could play different characters, both individually but in conversation,” Wang told Style.com of his inspiration for the ads. “I thought Kate and Lara together could be provocative, sensual, unpredictable.” Let’s not forget to add “sexy” to that list, too. In the photographs by Steven Klein, Moss and Stone pose provocatively—at one point with Stone straddling Moss—while showing off the brand’s metal-trimmed dresses and pearl ear cuffs.

British Detectives In Pakistan To Question London Murder Suspects

 lynks     10:23     No comments

Pakistani Interior Ministry on Monday said a team of British investigators had arrived in Islamabad to interrogate suspects in connection with the 2010 murder of an exiled politician, Imran Farooq, in London.

The ministry said in a report that Farooq, 50, had been living in exile in London since 1992, after a crackdown against his MQM political party in Karachi.

It said that he was found to have been stabbed to death with British detectives pointing their fingers at two Pakistani middle-aged men who had arrived in London months before the crime and left immediately afterwards.

It said that the suspects were apprehended earlier in June, in Pakistan’s south-western province of Balochistan.

It added that the third suspect accused of arranging British visas for the two men was arrested in Karachi.

The ministry said that the British investigators planned to question the suspects in Islamabad in the presence of Pakistani officers.

Having difficulty sleeping at nights! here are 10 Possible Solutions

 lynks     10:19     No comments

1. Turn your room into an icebox.
You are Lil Jon, your A/C is a rap video vixen, and you must see to it that it gets low. Way low. Have that thing pumping chilly air through the vents until you’re forced to wrap yourself tightly under the blankets. When I’m feeling extreme, I’ll turn on an additional fan to complement things with a little wind chill factor. I’m telling you guys, being snug and warm under the covers while it’s freezing outside of them will eventually lead to you passing out.

2. Duck tape your mind’s mouth shut.
If you’re like me, the second your head hits the pillow, your brain decided to begin reflecting on every potential disaster, worst case scenario, upcoming bill, past humiliating moment and hypothetical future embarrassment while my eyes are wide opened, filled with fatigue and stress. Whenever I catch myself thinking in great detail about current life problems and playing the what-if game, I sit up, take a deep breath and say, “Hey, mind – you’re gonna have to pipe the f-ck down. Mmk, pumpkin?” Well, it’s more about telling yourself that you can’t solve anything at 3:42 AM and the chances of you tripping, falling and cracking your head open in front of everyone is highly unlikely. Cleanse your thoughts and try that whole falling asleep thing again.
