jennifer Garner spends day off from filming visiting sick children at Atlanta hospital including boy, 9, undergoing aggressive chemotherapy

lynks     18:43     child care, health     No comments

Jennifer Garner is busy filming her latest movie Miracles from Heaven in Atlanta, but spent her day off giving back to some local children.
Garner and her costar in the film, Kylie Rogers, visited Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite on Sunday, snapping photos with a 9-year-old named Henry Shepherd.
Henry was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma - a form of bone cancer - last Thanksgiving, and was at the hospital receiving his latest round chemotherapy.

Good heart: Garner (with Henry's sister, Henry, and he co-star Kylie Rogers) is in Atlanta filming Miracles from Heaven

Henry's mother Carrie told Fox Atlanta that her son was thrilled having been a fan of Garner's after seeing her in Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day.
She also described Garner - who visited with the family for about 10 minutes - as 'genuinely nice.'
That was not the only good news for Henry on Sunday either, as it also marked his second-to-last chemo treatment.

Earlier this year Henry had to have surgery to remove a malignant tumor from his femur, which required his foot to be removed from his leg and then rotated 180 degrees.
It was reconstructed so that his ankle can now function as his knee.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with Henry's medical treatments, hoping to raise $100,000.
'This is a marathon that Henry is running, not a sprint. There will be years of medical bills, physical therapy sessions, and prosthesis fittings,' they write on the page.
'With your help this financial burden can be alleviated, allowing Henry to move forward and do many "heroic" things in the years to come.'
Garner's new movie tells the story of a terminally ill child who is miraculously healed, based on the book of the same name.
She has been filming in Atlanta the past few weeks and was recently joined there by her estranged husband Ben Affleck.
Garner filed for divorce from Affleck on June 30, just one day after the couples 10th wedding anniversary.
Helping out: Estranged husband Ben Affleck has joined Garner to be with their children, and was seen with daughter Violet (above) on Sunday

Affleck was also spotted on Sunday as well, shopping with the couple's daughter Violet.
The two appeared to be buying supplies for the new puppy Affleck was seen carrying last week.
The pair were seen together and both wearing their wedding bands on Saturday as they got ice cream with children Violet, Seraphina and Samuel.
It was reported on Wednesday by US Weekly that Affleck had begun a relationship with 28-year-old Christine Ouzounian while he and Garner were on a 10-month break prior to their divorce.
Ouzounian was working as a nanny to their three children at the time, but once Garner learned of the relationship she let the woman go from her job.
The pair were reportedly together last week in Los Angeles, and one friend of Ouzounisn she is calling this 'true love.'

Patient's 31-year wait for a new kidney finally ends with a phone call at 4am: Retired jeweller was told possible match had been found and to get to hospital as soon as possible

 lynks     17:28     health     No comments

After waiting three decades for a donor kidney, David Dawson had started to give up hope.
But a phone call at 4am brought the news that his transplant could finally go ahead.
The 52-year-old was woken by the ringing and dismissed it as a prank call at first. But luckily he answered and was told to get to hospital as quickly as possible as there was a possible match for a new organ.
David Dawson, a retired jeweller, has suffered from kidney failure since the age of 16 and has had dialysis three times a week since being 22

Mr Dawson, a retired jeweller, has suffered from kidney failure since the age of 16 and has had dialysis three times a week since being 22.
He is believed to have endured one of the longest waits in Britain for a transplant. On average, patients are on the list for three years.
But once Mr Dawson had the call on June 30, it was only 12 hours until he was on the operating table at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Now Mr Dawson, of Milton, Staffordshire, who has never married, is looking forward to enjoying the simple pleasures in life such as drinking a beer.
It is his second kidney transplant after having the operation at 22. But his body rejected the new organ within nine months and he went back on the waiting list in 1984.
‘I thought a match would be found at some stage but as time went on, I started to give up,’ he said.
Mr Dawson is believed to have endured one of the longest waits in Britain for a transplant. He is pictured right with his brother Philip after his first failed kidney transplant

‘I’d accepted I would be on dialysis for the rest of my life.’
Remembering the call from the hospital, Mr Dawson said: ‘I just wondered who would be calling me so early. But the phone went three or four times and I decided to go downstairs and answer it.’
After being driven to the hospital by his nephew Robert Dawson, 25, Mr Dawson was told the transplant could go ahead. He broke down and cried as he heard the news.
There are 5,379 people waiting for a kidney transplant in the UK. But last week, the NHS reported a 5 per cent drop in the number of donors, the first fall in 11 years.
This meant 224 fewer patients were able to have transplants last year.
Mr Dawson was operated on by consultant renal surgeon Clare Pattenden.
She said: ‘There are hundreds of highly sensitised patients waiting in similar states, many will never receive a transplant and become too unfit or die on the list.
‘The message is simple: more patients will have the opportunity to receive a life-changing transplant if more people join the organ donation register.’
The British Kidney Patient Association said it was not aware of anyone else who had waited more than 30 years. Policy director Fiona Loud said: ‘This case does show that people should never give up hope.’

Ebola resurrect in Liberia which Puts Nigeria in Fear

 lynks     00:15     health     No comments

Nigeria began moves to douse panic and raise alert levels on Ebola virus disease, after a 17-year-old Liberian boy died from the virus just seven weeks after the country was declared free of the virus.

"The resurgence puts fear in all of us," health permanent secretary Linus Awute told Daily Trust in an interview assessing Nigeria's preparedness in face of a resurgence in Liberia.

"But what do we do with that kind of fear? It is to remain alert, vigilant, observing personal and environmental hygiene, while technically we continue to maintain our response mechanism."

Liberia finds two Ebola cases weeks after being declared free of it

 lynks     09:07     health     No comments

Liberia confirmed on Wednesday it had at least two cases of Ebola, nearly two months after the West African country worst hit by the disease had been declared free of it.

More than 11,200 people have died since last year in the worst ever outbreak of Ebola, nearly all of them in three neighbouring countries, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Liberia was the worst-hit, with more than 4,800 people dying, but was declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organization on May 9 after 42 days passed with no new infections.

Neighbouring Sierra Leone and Guinea are still suffering, with 20 new cases reported in the week to June 21 between them.

Liberian authorities were monitoring more than 100 people to contain a new outbreak after the body of 17-year-old Abraham Memaigar tested positive for the virus on Sunday in Margibi County, a rural area about 30 miles from the capital.
